Fink Desert Race. www.finkedesertrace.com.au The Tattersalls Finke Desert Race is Australia's premier off-road racing event that attracts bike, car and buggy entries from around Australia and overseas. It is a multi-terrain, two-day race through desert country from Alice Springs to the small Aputula (Finke) Community and is reputed to be one of the most difficult off-road races in one of the most remote places in the world. The Finke, as the event is commonly known, is run along sections of the Old Ghan Railway service track, adjacent to the railway line, along a winding corrugated track, which snakes through typical outback terrain of red dirt, sand, spinifex, mulga and desert oaks. Usually held in early June.

It is approximately 700kms west of Rockhampton along the Capricorn Highway. Bookings essential. Qantas Founders Museum is the only place in the world where you can tour two fully equipped passenger jet aircraft. The ex-Qantas 747-200 VH-EBQ is permanently located at the Museum and is open for guided tours including a unique wing walk experience. Also a fully restored Boeing 707, VH-XBA, the very first passenger jet registered in Australia and Qantas first jet aircraft.
